Marina Del Rey, with its sprawling 20,000-square-foot space, sought to revamp its larger room—approximately 11,000 square feet, capable of being partitioned into four separate areas. The room, distinguished by its beautiful crown molding, traditional design, and custom carpeting, required a lighting overhaul to match its stately charm.
With Tirso Lighting’s seven-year partnership with Marina Del Rey, we were tasked to design and implement a state-of-the-art lighting system in 2024, focusing on the coves that had been dimmed by outdated technology.
Behind the Scenes
In the Marina Del Rey project, our team at Tirso Lighting meticulously planned and executed a transformative lighting design. The process involved overcoming challenges such as limited cove space and integrating new LED systems while maintaining the venue’s elegance. The hands-on effort, from removing old fixtures to installing advanced controls, highlights our dedication to enhancing the venue’s ambiance. Our innovative solutions ensure Marina Del Rey continues to offer a sophisticated, memorable experience for every event.
Challenges
The primary challenge revolved around the limited space within the coves—merely three to four inches between the crown molding and ceiling, less than ideal for optimal light dispersion. This constraint demanded a solution that could illuminate the space effectively, ensuring the lighting could still create a significant impact without the recommended cove dimensions.
Solutions
LED Tribon System Integration: Our choice of the TLI LED Tribon system, an RGB color-changing setup, was driven by its versatility and compact design, fitting perfectly into the constrained cove space. Despite the spatial limitations, our team skillfully removed the old lighting fixtures and seamlessly installed the new system, rejuvenating the venue’s aesthetic appeal.
Custom Control System Development: Transitioning from the antiquated Martin Light Jockey to a more modern and versatile control solution, we introduced the Obsidian Controlled Onyx platform paired with a custom-designed mobile app. This innovative app allowed Marina Del Rey’s management to control the lighting intricacies of the entire room or individual partitions with ease, accommodating various event setups and preferences. The app’s user-friendly interface was tailored specifically for the venue’s operational needs, marking a significant upgrade in both functionality and user experience.
Integration of Existing Moving Fixtures: A notable aspect of this project was the integration of the venue’s 60 existing moving fixtures into the new control system. This not only preserved the functional elements of the previous setup but also enhanced them, allowing for a cohesive and comprehensive lighting experience across the entire event space.
